Mental Toughness ~ Do you have it?

Mental Toughness is seen in top athletes who are able to perform from event to event.  Think of those exceptional competitors who obviously have extraordinary natural  talents but take it to the next level with their "mind" strengths.  The Olympics are coming soon and we have seen how some Olympians "tower" over their competitors.  We have a handful of professional athletes who have risen to similar heights in their respective sports.  In business, we have recognized some executives who have outstanding leadership skills that have clearly differentiated themselves from their colleagues.

Below are 6 ways to help build on the "Mental Side of Success"

Confidence in your ability ~ Belief in yourself and your ability to lead is so powerful in these people.  They often times seek perfection in themselves and accomplish significantly more than average people do.  They have clear expectations in their skill sets and have the CAPACITY to understand their CAPABILITY.  They constantly strive to build on their talents and recognize fully those development areas that are capable of growing.

Hunger to Achieve ~ Top mentally prepared athletes and business leaders have an avid quest for elite performance.  Through their preparation, study and development they are ready to go 110% when the bell rings. They are quick to respond to necessary changes when their original plan of action is not working.  They generally have several plans in place ready to utilize if needed.

Resiliency ~ The ability to rebound quickly from adversity and also being flexible in problem solving by not accepting the easy way out but rather exploring new ways to address issues. They are humble and most willing to take personal accountability for mistakes.  Owning up to shortcomings and learning from past mistakes.  Keeping the glass half full with a positive can-do attitude.  They have mastered successful methods of achievement but are still open to discovering new and better ways of operation.

Cope with stress & Anxieties ~ They have a magnificent manner in remaining calm in edgy situations where pressure to perform is constant.  A true trait of leadership are those who distinguish themselves by uniting the troops in difficult times.  This rallying force can carry a team through the toughest of situations.  Walking the Talk as well as “Walking in their shoes” helps build coolness under pressure.

Competitive ~ They have a Winning” attitude and mentality but also show true sportsmanship to both their competition and teammates.  They recognize the there is no “I” in team but rather in WIN.  Despite their desire to do their BEST, they do not sacrifice the TEAM for their individual purpose.  They realize that support and encouragement of their fellow teammates is the most important overall goal in achievement.

Focus ~ Both physical and mental edge is needed.  Combination of your natural abilities as well as a constant desire to develop and learn new skills in achievement.  Distinguishing factors are the ability that one has in fully connecting with the team and employing the right strategies in achieving your goal.  A sense of urgency is readily visible in those who are truly focused but they envision the long-term win versus short term battle victories.

MENTAL TOUGHNESS is a trait that separates GOOD from GREAT.  Power yourself with these six teachable skills and become a GREAT Leader!  Have a super weekend!
